Head Coach

Nathan Amberg
Nathan Amberg began coaching the Horace Student Congress Team in 2020. He also acts as the head Debate Coach, the Head Speech Coach, and the National Speech and Debate Association advisor for both Horace and Heritage.
In the first two years of the program, Horace has placed 5th at state (2020) and 2nd at state (2021); the state tournament is held in the North Dakota State Capitol building each November. To date, the Horace Congress Team has had fifteen students place at the State Congress Tournament. Additionally, three students have qualified to compete in congressional debate at the National Speech and Debate Association National Tournament held annually in June.
Before coaching at Horace, Amberg coached speech at Dickinson High School (2013-2020) and Dickinson Trinity (2011-2013). Amberg also coached student congress at Dickinson High School (2015-2020) and helped coach and start the Dickinson Trinity student congress team in 2018. He has been named a Regional Coach of the Year two times by his colleagues through the Communication, Speech, Theatre Association of ND (CSTAND). Between Congress, Debate, and Speech, Amberg has coached over 150 state finalists and 20 state champions. In 2019 Amberg was named the State Coach of the Year for Student Congress (CSTAND), and in 2018 and 2022 Amberg was named the Class A State Coach of the Year for Speech (CSTAND).

Assistant Coaches

Cassidy Hughes
Cassidy Hughes is the current Student Congress assistant coach.
Hughes is currently receiving her Undergraduate at North Dakota State University with the goal of majoring in Elementary Education. Her overall goal is to work towards a Master's in Education after she receives her Elementary Education Degree.
Though new to the coaching game, Hughes enjoys coaching the students and getting to know them as people. Hughes graduated from Dickinson High School and was coached by Amberg in both Student Congress and Speech. During her high school years, she was a state champion in student congress, a state champion in speech, competed at the National Speech and Debate tournament, and placed at state several other times in both student congress and speech.
