Coaching Staff

Head Coach

Jen Smart

Coach Smart was hired in January of 2023 as the first softball coach at Horace High School. A native of Brandon, Manitoba, she attended Valley City State University and obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology with a Minor in Athletic Coaching while playing softball for the Vikings. In her four years at Valley City State, Smart had a career average of .284. In her senior season, Smart hit a career-high .321 while also scoring a career-best 25 runs. Smart was also the team's No.2 pitcher in her senior season and compiled a 10-6 record and an impressive 2.84 earned run average. She was in the circle for 88 innings, had eight complete games and also earned one complete-game shutout. Smart later attended University of Mary and obtained a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. 

To accompany her experience as an athlete, Coach Smart has a number of years of coaching experience. She has coached at both the collegiate and high school levels, serving as an assistant at Williston State College, Concordia College and Shanley High School. 

Jen works full time for the State of North Dakota as a Developmental Disabilities Program Manager and lives in Moorhead with her husband, Baron, and three children: Jayden, Peyton and Malik.

Assistant Coaches

Marissa Reign

Coach Reign is also in her second year with the Hawks Softball program. A native of Fargo, ND attended Shanley High School and later North Dakota State College of Science. Reign is a Graphic Designer by trade, but also a stay-at home Mom to a busy 4-year-old named Mason. Reign lives in West Fargo with her husband, Josh.

Kaitlyn Hanson

Coach Hanson, who is also back for her second year leading the JV Hawks Softball squad and assisting the Varsity team. In the off season, she serves the same roles for the Hawks Girls Basketball teams (Head JV and Varsity Assistant). Coach Hanson grew up in Horace, ND and attended West Fargo High and Sheyenne High School where she played softball and basketball. Upon graduating from Sheyenne, Hanson attended Mayville State University where she met her now husband, Dave.

Sara Parman

Coach Parman is in her first season with the Hawks softball program. In the off season, she also served as the freshman volleyball coach. Coach Parman was born in Omaha, NE playing softball and swimming. After high school graduation, she went onto play softball for Peru State College as a catcher and 3rd baseman, where she graduated with her degree in Physical Education. She then attended Mississippi State University where she earned her master’s degree in human development and family studies, with an emphasis in youth and adolescents. Prior to working at Horace High School, Coach Parman worked for the athletic departments at MSU and NDSU assisting student athletes with their time management, study skills, and ensuring their eligibility remained in tact. Coach Parman lives in Horace with her husband Bryon and 2 kids, Caleb and Jacob.

Kara O'Byrne

Kara O'Byrne is in her first year with the Hawks Softball program and will primarily be working with the pitchers. O'Byrne, a native of Stewartville, Minn. played for NCAA Division I North Dakota State University. 

During her 4-year career with the Bison, O'Byrne amassed a total of 143.0 innings pitched. Her career season came in 2019 when she was in the circle for 42.1 innings and had a 2.81 earned run average and a 3-2 record. O'Byrne was named the Summit League Pitcher of the Week during the 2019 campaign and earned a spot on the Summit League Commisioners List. O'Byrne was also placed on the NFCA All American Scholar Athlete and Summit League Honor Roll during her junior and senior seasons. She completed her Bison career with a 4.31 Earned Run Average.
